Project Summary
This seven-month project aims to improve the quality of health and education at Antahovary Primary School. SEED will construct a fully furnished three-classroom school building, five gender-segregated latrines complete with handwashing stations and a menstrual hygiene management (MHM) facility, teachers' accommodation and a 10,000-litre rainwater harvesting system. SEED will also install a solar energy system to provide lighting for the the school population as well as community members.
What is the Problem?
The previous school building was destroyed by a fire in January 2021. At present, the school has no education infrastructure. Five teachers and 150 students are temporarily using a three-meter square room in the Village Leader's house as a classroom. Due to overcrowding, student take turns receiving lessons, significantly reducing students' classroom time. The 25 Preschoolers learn under a tree. About 100 students have dropped out over the past two years due to the limited classroom space.
Project Sekoly: Antahovary the Solution
SEED will construct a fully furnished three-classroom school building, five gender-segregated latrines complete with handwashing stations and a menstrual hygiene management (MHM) facility, teachers' accommodation, and provide a 10,000L rainwater harvesting system. The provision of these infrastructure will be complemented by sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) education, delivered to students and teachers. SEED will also install solar energy for the school to provide lighting.
Potential Long Term Impacts
The construction of new classrooms will provide 150 student spaces, improve the existing learning environment and enable students to attend full-day classes. Onsite housing aims to support teacher livelihoods, minimize staff absenteeism, and enhance school management and security. The 10,000L rainwater harvesting system will provide clean drinking water, supply running water to the handwashing stations and MHM facility. MHM facility will provide private and safe space for menstrual management.
