Ambinanikely Fire Appeal

SEED Madagascar

My Story

On the morning of Sunday 2nd September 2018, an electrical fault in a house in the Ambinanikely area of Fort Dauphin, sparked and caught fire. The fire spread rapidly to neighbouring houses in the strong 30 mph winds and by the time the fire service and the local community subdued the flames, the fire had completely destroyed eleven houses. Fortunately no one was injured but families have reported losing valuable livestock as well as essential bedding, food stores and clothes.

Two members of SEED Madagascar and their families were those to lose their houses to the fire: Mamonjisoa and Theodore. Mamonjisoa has worked for SEED since 2015 and currently manages the education for SEED’s rainwater harvesting initiative, Project Tatirano. Theodore first worked with SEED on Project Malio in 2016 and since has played the role of CLO Manager with sexual and reproductive health rights in Project Safidy. The photos show how all that remains of their houses are piles of still smouldering ash, sporadic charred cooking pots and pans, and the bare san-plat of the family latrine.

In total 91 people have lost their homes and belongings due to the fire. In a country where home insurance is non-existent, Mamonjisoa and Theodore's families will have to start from square one.

SEED is providing emergency relief, but in order to do more, we need your help. Please, show your support today so we can get essential supplies to these families who have lost everything and help them rebuild their homes and their lives.

Donating £10 would provide a cooking pot.

Donating £50 would provide a bed.

Donating £100 would provide a metal roof for one house.

Donating £600 will build an entire house.

Thank you from everybody in the SEED Madagascar team.
